Backstory

My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of 2008. It was caught early. Aggressive bilateral mastectomy was the choice. My concern was the lack of a cohesive focus to find a cure. I wanted a definitive course, I wanted strong leadership, I wanted to know the solution. So, I did what any normally crazy supportive co-survivor would do... enlisted for an ironman. Better then expected

Anticipated performing the event in 1hr20min to 1hr25min. Came in just under the wire at 1hr19min25sec. Full results are available at www.pigmantri.com

Day began with thunderstorms, but cleared around 6am for the race.

Survived the swim. Actually much better on the swim then expected for the first time in water. Purchased a wetsuit which I believe made a big difference. Lots of advancements in the technology over my old circa 1997 wetsuit.

Bike felt good. Average 22.3 mph and could have kept that pace for another few hours. Exactly what I wanted to feel.

Run also felt good. Average 7min52sec per mile and could have held that pace for another hour+.

Overall 63 out of 386 (men). Not bad for a few years off. Mission was accomplished, next event is a half-ironman in August. Strong work to do between now and then.

Giving more thought to the hair. Very long and problematic. Tried to tuck it into a swim cap and felt like every bid the amatuer that it must have looked... However, maybe like the mighty Sampson, it was the source of my strength. Much deliberation will take place over the next few weeks.

Lesly is progressing well. Another investigative procedure schedule in 8 days, with results 7 days later. Will keep you all posted.
